Undergraduate Years

Undergraduate Years

During training as a dental surgeon at University College Cork, I was elected Class Representative and also Chairperson of the University Dental Society.

I was awarded a Health Research Board grant (in my third year) to complete research examining enamel microstructure - and presented my findings at the world IADR meeting in Florida, USA in 1997.

I was awarded the All-Ireland Intervarsity Crest Undergraduate Research Award for that research.

General Dental Practice 2000-2010

Working initially in the Nottingham, United Kingdom (1997-1999) I practiced general dentistry within the National Health Service (NHS) system.

On returning to Ireland, I was initially appointed Senior Anatomy Demonstrator at University College, Cork (1999-2000) - while practicing locally in Cork City - as I prepared a dental surgery to open in late 2000. I was also appointed Registrar in Restorative Dentistry, University Dental School & Hospital, University College, Cork.

I founded my own dental practice in Newport, Co. Tipperary in 2000. I provided general dental service for all age groups in that community until 2010.

These 10 years also included a term as North Munster President of the Irish Dental Association (IDA), Council Member of IDA and Negotiator for IDA in the Dental Treatment Services Scheme - DTSS Review (2006). I was part of a 5 member team who sought to negotiate a new dental contract for the Dental Treatment Services Scheme (DTSS).

I was appointed one of twenty National Examining Dentists (ED) in the one-year pilot scheme for DTSS probity (2007) - this was a Health Service Executive (HSE) initiative. Each ED was tasked with reviewing probity within the DTSS. This work contributed to the Batchelor Report (2009).

In 2010, I stepped away from full time day-to-day general practice to pursue my post-graduate education - having been appointed National Clinical Director of the first ever Corporate Dental Company in the Republic of Ireland, (Smiles) - serving in that capacity until 2015. I was appointed to a similar role (Group Clinical Advisor) also for Dental Care Ireland from 2016-2020. I am an acknowledged contributor to the National Oral Health Policy (2019).

I continue a clinical role (and as practice manager) with the Resident Oral Surgeon at Bon Secours, Limerick.

I balance this role with lecturing, research and study at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

I was appointed Adjunct Faculty at the Graduate School of Healthcare Management (RCSI) in 2016.

I was appointed Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University Dental School & Hospital, College of Medicine and Healthcare, University College, Cork (UCC) in 2025.

I advise Portman Dentex (Ireland) as their National Group Clinical Advisor currently (2021 - present).
